A confidentiality order has been imposed on the case of Grand Isias Hotel, which collapsed due to the earthquake disaster in Kahramanmaraş and buried more than 60 people.
In the Grand Isias Hotel in Adıyaman, which turned into rubble after two earthquakes centred in Kahramanmaraş, 31 tour guides, 35 TRNC students, teachers and parents lost their lives.
Prof. Dr. Serhan Şensoy, Prof. Dr. Özgür Eren, Prof. Dr. Umut Türker, Assoc. Dr. Eriş Uygar and Assoc. Dr. Mehmet C. Geneş from the Department of Civil Engineering at Eastern Mediterranean University prepared a 7-page report on the hotel that collapsed due to the earthquake.
According to Cumhuriyet’s Mehmet Oflaz, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet C. Geneş went to Adıyaman Courthouse after his investigations at the wreckage site and met with K.K., the public prosecutor conducting the investigation of Isias Hotel. The prosecutor stated that an investigation had been initiated, that the experts had made all necessary examinations and determinations, and that six concrete and reinforcement samples had been taken. It was also noted in the report that a confidentiality order was imposed on the file.
“The reason for the collapse of this building is not the magnitude of the earthquake, but the wrong design and/or manufacturing,” the report said.
“The rubble found in the building area was closely examined and it was determined that the concrete quality was obviously low and that stream pebbles and sand were used,” the report said:
“Considering the size of the stream pebbles, it was determined that they are often larger than the maximum grain size in concretes to be used in such structures, the granulometry in the distribution of gravel and sand in the concrete is not good, and it is easily dispersed in manual control.
It was concluded that the construction of the building in question, whose foundation and columns were designed and constructed according to 5 storeys, was not done correctly. It has been concluded that the floor increase is a serious mistake and it is possible for the building to collapse even in the lowest earthquakes.”
